Stanley Cup Game 7 Overtime

Stanley Cup Final Game 7 Overtime History

Overtime Thrills in the Stanley Cup Final

In the storied history of the Stanley Cup Final, only twice has Game 7 required overtime to determine a champion. Both games featured dramatic moments that etched themselves into hockey lore.

Pete Babando's Legendary Goal (1950)

In 1950, the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs battled in an epic Game 7 that went into double overtime. With just over four minutes remaining, Pete Babando scored the Cup-winning goal, giving the Red Wings their third consecutive championship.

Pastrnak's Overtime Heroics (2019)

Nearly 70 years later, David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins became the second player to score an overtime goal in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. His goal in the second overtime period sent the Bruins to the next round and ended the Toronto Maple Leafs' season.

Other Notable Overtime Moments

In addition to these two overtime wins, there have been several other notable overtime moments in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

  • Tony Leswick's fluke goal gave the Detroit Red Wings their second overtime win in Game 7 of the Cup in 1954.
  • The 1987 Stanley Cup was the last time a Stanley Cup Game 7 had a lead change or a game-tying goal.

As the Stanley Cup Final continues to produce thrilling moments, the possibility of another overtime Game 7 remains one of the most exciting prospects in sports.
